Lent & Easter

The season of Lent leading up to Easter is a season of preparation, readying ourselves for the celebration of Resurrection. It is also a time to focus on growing as disciples and extending ourselves outward into our neighborhoods and engaging the community around us in a way that builds meaningful relationships.

Read a Chapter a Day Challenge!

Join the Lenten challenge to read a chapter of John a day, starting the day after Ash Wednesday (February 14, 2024) and concluding just before Palm Sunday (March 24).

Conley's "Bring a Friend to Church" Sunday is February 11, 2024

An opportunity to bring a guest, perhaps a family member or friend to worship with us this Lenten Season.  Refreshments will be available after in the Fellowship Hall.

Why "bring a friend"? Congregations often turn inward as we journey through the lifecycle of the congregation. We become satisfied with maintaining the comfort of those who are already here and lose sight of the mission that we are called to be stewards of, the mission to go and make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Ash Wednesday Service

February 14, 2024 at 6:30pm in the Sanctuary

All Are Welcome!

Ash Wednesday is a holy day of prayer, fasting, and repentance. It marks the beginning of Lent, a season of 40 days (excluding Sundays) leading up to Easter Sunday. The name “Ash Wednesday” is derived from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of believers in the shape of a cross. The ashes are typically obtained by burning the palms blessed on the previous year’s Palm Sunday.

Palm Sunday Service

All Are Welcome!

Palm Sunday occurs on the Sunday before Easter. This celebration celebrates Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, mentioned in each of the four Gospels. Jesus entered the city knowing He would be tried and crucified and welcomed His fate to rise from the grave and save us from sin! Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, the remembrance of Jesus' last days.

Maundy Thursday Service

March 28, 2024 at 6:30pm in the Sanctuary

Maundy Thursday is an alternate name for Holy Thursday, the first of the three days of solemn remembrance of the events leading up to and immediately following the crucifixion of Jesus. The English word "Maundy" comes from the Latin mandatum, which means "commandment."
As recorded in John's gospel, on his last night before his betrayal and arrest, Jesus washed the feet of his disciples and then gave them a new commandment to love one another as he had loved them (John 13:34).

Tenebrae (Good Friday) Service

March 29, 2024 at 6:30pm in the Sanctuary

Conley's commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus with a Tenebrae service.
The story of the suffering and death of Jesus from John’s gospel is divided into 16 readings. After each segment of the story is read, a candle is extinguished. After the fifteenth reading, which confirms that Jesus had died on the cross, the last of the 15 lit candles is extinguished or taken away, and a loud sound (called strepitus in Latin) is made to convey the sense of total loss of God’s presence and the effect of the death of Jesus on the universe. The final story of the burial is read in near darkness.
Worshipers leave in silence to ponder the impact of Christ's death and await the celebration of the coming Resurrection.
